Die Vernetzung mit wissenschaftlichen Communities war uns von Anfang an wichtig. Nicht nur, um die eigene Praxis weiterzuentwickeln, sondern ebenso um Anschlussfähigkeiten an andere Ansätze auszuloten und produktiv miteinander zu verknüpfen.
Im Zentrum unserer jüngeren Forschungsaktivitäten stehen die Konzepte Imagination Literacy und Artistic Citizenship, die uns als Kernkonzepte dienen, um unsere Praxis an der Schnittstelle ästhetischer und politischer Bildung zu konzipieren.

Beitrag: Imagination als widerständige Praxis. Zukunftsentwürfe als Artikulation von artistic citizenship Zum Beitrag (open access)
Der Beitrag geht von der Beobachtung aus, dass gegenwärtige Krisendiagnosen mit einer Verengung kollektiver Zukunftsvorstellungen einhergehen: Zukunft erscheint entweder als technokratisch zu steuernder Planungsraum oder als dystopisches Bedrohungsszenario. Daraus resultiert eine Krise der Imagination, durch die alternative gesellschaftliche Zukünfte zunehmend in den Hintergrund rücken. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird das Konzept artistic citizenship entfaltet, um Imagination als politisch wirksame literacy im Kontext Kultureller Bildung zu rahmen. Daran anschließend wird imagination literacy als kulturelle Fähigkeit thematisiert, Zukunftsentwürfe hervorzubringen, zu variieren und gemeinsam zu reflektieren – jenseits hegemonialer Narrative der Alternativlosigkeit.
Diese Überlegungen werden anhand des Workshopformats Liebe Zukunft konkretisiert, das mit performativen und spekulativen Verfahren arbeitet und temporäre Erfahrungsräume schafft, in denen Zukunft als sozial-relationaler Möglichkeitsraum erfahrbar wird. Der Beitrag plädiert dafür, die politische Dimension von Vorstellungskraft ernst zu nehmen und Zukunft als offen, aushandelbar und kollektiv gestaltbar zu begreifen.
Panel Presentation: The Challenge of Shrinking Futures for Democratic Education Slide-Set (PDF); Script
Contemporary Western societies are dominated by two future narratives: techno-solutionist optimism and dystopian collapse. Despite their apparent opposition, both systematically foreclose collective agency and shared imagination. Drawing on analysis of anticipatory regimes in education, we argue that this narrowing of possible futures is not incidental but systemically enforced, including by the institutions charged with actually expanding them.
Against this diagnosis, we propose imagination literacy as a core democratic practice: not a private mental capacity but a social, collective, learnable skill. Grounded in the framework of artistic citizenship, we argue that arts education creates spaces in which participants can inhabit uncertain futures without the pressure of immediate feasibility, i.e., temporary publics for speculative, affective, and collective engagement with futurity. For us, the challenge for democratic education today is not technological but imaginative: how to foster the capacity to reinvent futures as shared, ethically grounded possibilities.
Workshop: Anarchive of Time - Remembering and Imagining Before Ruins Workshop descprition
In this workshop at the Before Ruins Conference organized by the STSing e.V., we asked: How can we correspond with the future from within a landscape of remains? We organized a one-day field workshop at the Bochumer Westpark. In this post-industrial terrain, where steel, wild vegetation and leisure activities intertwine, we explored how remebering is connected to practices of imagining.
Drawing on approaches from artistic research, participants engaged in a series of small, performative field practices: tracing, walking, recording, and writing. Moving between material traces and speculative futures, the workshop attends to how infrastructures act as temporal agents that continue to shape collective imagination.
The traces gathered throughout the day (images, textures, text fragments) were assembled onto a shared site map, forming a collective Anarchive of the Future: a tactile record of situated memory and shared speculation.
Auf der kubi-online Jahrestagung 2026 in Wolfenbüttel konnten wir unseren Liebe Zukunft-Workshop durchführen und anschließend gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmenden über die dahinter liegenden Haltungen und Ideen diskutieren.
